The coloring book pages in the Halloween Romance Pack are reproduced from 72 Vintage Halloween Greeting Card Images to Color: A Coloring Book Inspired by Halloween Postcards Circa 1905–1920 — a Bijoux Coloring Books Seasonal Edition, available on Amazon.

The images are based on Halloween greeting postcards that were so popular to exchange with friends from about 1905 to 1920. The tone of the cards was usually sweet and even romantic. Halloween was actually courtship season! The idea was that Halloween sat at the time of year when the veil between worlds thinned, so the future might be glimpsed. For instance:

• A young woman sits alone before a mirror at midnight in a darkened room, lit by a single candle, sometimes eating an apple or brushing her hair. Her future husband’s face should appear over her shoulder in the glass.

• Two hazelnuts or chestnuts, named for yourself and your sweetheart, go side by side on the hot hearth. If they burn quietly together, the match is a happy one. If one hisses, jumps, or cracks away from the other, that person is faithless or the courtship will fail.

• Bobbing for apples — the first person to seize an apple with their teeth would be first to marry. Apples were sometimes marked with suitors’ names, so you got a name as well as a turn.
