Welcome to World’s Smokers to Color Volume Two: A Coloring Book of 24 Classic Illustrations Inspired by Trade Cards from Allen & Ginter 1888.
Allen & Ginter was founded in Richmond, Virginia, by John F. Allen and Lewis Ginter, growing from a small tobacco partnership into one of the largest cigarette manufacturers in the country by the late 1880s. The firm is credited with pioneering the cigarette card, a small chromolithograph slipped into each pack as a stiffener and a lure, launching a collecting craze that would shape tobacco marketing for decades to come.
Among the most popular of these was “World’s Smokers,” a set of 50 cards issued in 1888, one packed in every box of ten Allen & Ginter cigarettes. Each card portrayed a smoker from a different nation or culture, rendered in the bright, detailed chromolithography that made the series a favorite with collectors then and now. The 24 illustrations in this collection are inspired by cards from that original set.
The source cards are in the public domain, their copyright terms having fully expired. You can see them online via the Metropolitan Museum of Art (metmuseum.org/art/collection).
We’ve also reproduced all 24 original illustrations in color on the cover of this book.
This coloring book is an independent project and is not affiliated with any brand or organization.
We’ve inserted “blank” pages between the drawings so you don’t have to worry about your markers bleeding through. But instead of leaving those pages truly blank, we’ve added mini-images from World’s Smokers Volume One for your enjoyment.
